NOBODY makes things any more - at least
that's a common complaint, usually wafting over from a comfy corner
of the lounge bar. How wrong it is - as you will see from our striking
photographic feature on The Balvenie
Artisan Awards, with which Caledonia
is delighted to be associated. The awards, in their first year,
attracted a huge response from people running small businesses all
over the country, each of them using traditional skills in a contemporary
way. As well as creating employment, they are exporting beautiful
objects that help give the world a hint of what Scotland has to
offer.
Our stock is certainly high in Tuscany, where
John Bellany is much liked and respected, but where he is only
now putting on his first big Italian exhibition.
Juliet Horne, the current Miss Europe, won't
be doing our national image any harm either: she's more thoughtful
than is strictly necessary for a beauty queen. And in Mull Historical
Society we have a pop act that combine emotion with great tunes
and a seriousness that is in short supply in the charts. If, with
all this going on, you feel the need to check your Scottish roots,
then see our genealogy feature for some tips.
